Why TangoDJ exists

Seventeen years ago I started DJing milongas and quickly hit a wall: every DJ program was built for generic playlists, not tandas, not cortinas, not tango flow.

So I built my own tool. I used it to DJ around the world, and DJs kept asking, "What are you using?"

The problem was: it was never designed for anyone but me. It was hard to install and full of rough edges.

After changing laptops, I rebuilt it from the ground up. TangoDJ is that modern version: a rock-solid, tanda-first system that makes milonga DJing simpler, safer, and more enjoyable.

Is TangoDJ built specifically for milonga DJing (tandas/cortinas), or is it a general DJ app?

TangoDJ is built specifically for DJing Argentine tango events such as milongas, practicas, festivals, and marathons.

What DJ workflows is TangoDJ best for, and who is it not for?

TangoDJ is a strong fit if your workflow depends on organizing tandas, preparing playlists quickly, timing the night precisely, and keeping professional control of room sound. It is not aimed at general-purpose DJing outside tango events.

Does TangoDJ work offline?

Yes. TangoDJ works offline. Internet is only needed for license checks.

What platforms are supported?

Windows and macOS are supported, including Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

What audio formats are supported?

MP3, FLAC, WMA, AAC, OGG, M4A, AIFF, and APE are supported.

Migration / library

Can I import my existing library and playlists?

Yes. You can import music folders, M3U/M3U8 playlists, and libraries from VirtualDJ, Foobar2000, AIMP, Mixxx, and Apple Music.

Will TangoDJ recognize tandas from my playlists automatically?

Yes, with one caveat: tanda recognition depends on tags. If the files do not have usable genre and artist tags, they will not be recognized as tandas automatically.

How does auto-organize by orchestra/genre work?

Auto-organize works from genre and artist tags, and you can still reorganize things manually when you want.

Can I edit tags in bulk?

Yes. Even thousands of music files can be edited in bulk.

Can I export playlists or tandas back out?

Yes. You can export playlists and library results when you need to archive, move, or share material outside TangoDJ.

Live performance

Can I preview or cue on a second output?

Yes. You can use any audio device for preview.

Can I switch audio devices during a milonga without restarting?

Yes. Main and preview outputs can be changed in real time.

How does timing work?

TangoDJ keeps timing precise by skipping silent parts of tracks, inserting a predefined gap between tracks, and fading out cortinas at the time you set. You can also set custom start and stop points per track, so there is no need to prepare trimmed audio files.

How does playback protection work?

When the lock button is on, you can still edit the playlist, but playback flow itself cannot be interrupted or changed. If a track is marked stop-after-play, TangoDJ will stop when playback reaches that track.

Does it have undo/redo?

Yes. TangoDJ supports one-level undo/redo for paste, cut, and delete operations on lists.

Can I customize keyboard shortcuts?

Yes. Open Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts to search actions and assign the shortcuts you use during prep or live playback.

Can I control TangoDJ with a MIDI device?

Yes. MIDI controllers can be mapped as remote controls for almost every live action, including playback, volume, presets, EQ, filters, playlist commands, locks, and custom controls.

What can TangoDJ Mobile Companion control?

Mobile Companion can control playback, playlists, Master sound, loudness, EQ, and custom controls after it is paired with the desktop app.

Can I customize the layout or panels for live use versus prep?

Yes. All panels can be resized, toggled on or off, and swapped.

What EQ and sound tools are included?

TangoDJ has eight Master preset slots. Each preset can store filters, EQ, compressor settings, Auto gain behavior, and VST3 settings. Live spectrum feedback and clip prediction are included too.

Can I save and recall EQ presets instantly during a set?

Yes. Saving and recalling EQ presets is instant, even mid-track.

How many computers can I install it on?
